G08454 REMEMBRANCE CARD. (Erinnerungskarten)

BACKGROUND: A common practice in Europe that continues to this day, is the issue of a remembrance card on the death of a family member. These would be distributed to friends and family as a memorial item

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: It is a black and white card that is, approximately 4" high by 2 ½’ wide. A photograph of the deceased is at the top while beneath black print. It is a covered Pickelhaube-wearing soldier died in his 31st year at Neuve Chapelle. To the reverse is a printed illustration of a battlefield with a nun comforting a dying soldier whose hand is outstretched towards a break in the clouds, from where five horsemen descend. Underneath is the Gothic script, "Wenn Gott für uns kämpft, wer ist wider uns?" (When God for us struggles, who is against us?). This card is in excellent condition with minor edge wear, and very little yellowing.
