G07054 NON-COMBATANT’S CROSS OF HONOR 1914/18 RIBBON BAR. (Ehrenkreuz des Weltkrieges Kleine Ordensschnalle)

BACKGROUND: Instituted in July 1934 by von Hindenburg (resulting in its erroneous designation as the "Hindenburg Cross") to recognize service in WWI. It ranked beneath bravery awards but above other service and campaign awards.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 1" x 3/4" ribbed moire ribbon, which has a red stripe running along its center, flanked by black stripes, which are, in turn, flanked by wider white stripes, and then edged in black. The lack of a crossed swords device pinned to its face would indicate that it is a non-combatant’s award. Its reverse is covered in grey wool, through which protrudes a horizontal pin-back device from a metal plate. Moderate nap wear may be seen to the wool backing, but the ribbon itself is only very lightly age soiled, with all of its colors still being bright.
