G06955 "KM issue/Reichswehr" S 98/05 nA COMBAT BAYONET. (Seitengewehr) A second pattern model 1898/05 bayonet, with the flash guard along the back of its grips introduced in 1915, known as the S 98/05 nA ("Seitengewehr 98/05 neuer Art," or, Bayonet ‘98/’05 new Pattern), and its original scabbard. The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 19 3/4". Its blued steel, contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide and locking stud with one inspection marks in the form of what appears to be a crowned, Gothic letter "D," stamped above the reverse of the stud. Its contoured wooden grips each have nine diagonal grooves incised into them, and they are fixed by two plain-headed bolts and slot-headed washers. Visible through the rectangular cuts to the base of each grip is a circular cleaning hole. A sheet steel flash guard runs along the top of the grips between the stud guide and cross guard. The riveted steel cross guard has a scalloped muzzle guide to its top, and a "quillon," which curves backwards and terminates in a ball tip, extends from its base. The 14 1/2" blued blade, which is 1" wide near the guard, and widens to 1 3/8" before tapering to a point, has wide fullers along most of its length. Bluing is in excellent condition being about 90% complete. Blade is very well marked "Deutsche Maschinenfabrik, A-G Duisberg". Cross guard is stamped a "1920" date. The date indicates that it was inventoried and issued to the Reichswehr under Allied supervision, as was typical with bayonets of the period, and which was in accordance with the Versailles treaty. Its blued, sheet steel scabbard, adopted in 1915, has a throat screw and a raised frog lug near its mouth, and tapers along its 15 1/4" length to a ball tip. Bluing is mostly completely worn off the scabbard. Bayonet looks to have been re-issued 3 separate times, as there are 3 serial numbers present. The "O" in the serial numbers is for "Ostsee Station".
