G05854 PRUSSIAN RED CROSS MEDAL, 2ND CLASS. (Rotes Kreuz Medaille, II Klasse) The Imperial Prussian Red Cross awards were the predecessors of the German Red Cross awards introduced in 1922. This 1 5/16" diameter, die struck alloy, nickel-silver plated, second class Red Cross medal has, to its obverse, a Balkan cross, enameled in red, each of whose arms terminate in Prussian crowns, with "W," "R," "A" and "V" occupying the negative spaces around it. To the reverse is a branch of oak leaves arching along the left of the inscription: "Fuer Verdienste Um Das Rothe Kreuz" (For Merit At The Red Cross). Its 1 1/8" wide, ribbed moire ribbon is red, with two-toned vertical stripes near each edge, black and white to the left, and white and black to the right. It would appear that either end of the 2 1/16" tall ribbon has been glued together, and glue and paper remnants may be seen to its reverse top where it had evidently been mounted for display. The ribbon is lightly soiled and wrinkled, and there appear to be some light picks to the material. The medal itself, although retaining most of its silver wash, exhibits age darkening to its recesses, and light wear along its edges. Unmarked.
