G05753 ERSATZ COMBAT BAYONET. (Seitengewehr) An "ersatz" (substitute) bayonet and its scabbard, made in answer to shortages by a machine shop from stamped or cast parts. The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 17 1/4". The bayonet’s steel hilt has a stud guide and locking stud. The steel cross guard has an open-topped muzzle ring extending from its top. Both the hilt and cross guard appear to have been painted olive drab at some point, less than 30% of which remains. The 12 3/8" blade, which is 1" wide near the guard, has wide fullers along most of its length, and comes to a point with a swedge. A crowned letter "T" is stamped to the back of the blade near the ricasso. Scabbard runner marks and light surface scratching is evident to the polished blade. Its sheet steel scabbard has a throat screw and a raised frog lug near its mouth, and tapers along its 12 7/8" length. The scabbard is heavily surface spotted, and has numerous indentations to it.
