G04353 M1915/17 CANTEEN. (Feldflasche) A .8 liter, tin-plated and enameled steel canteen, as introduced in 1916, with a tall neck and metal-capped cork stopper. A leather retaining strap was fixed unto the top of the ribbed metal cap, which has separated, whose other end is sewn unto another strap, which has a metal spring hook to its top and a buttonhole to its base. The buttonhole mates with a small, zinc button sewn to the upper reverse of the canteen’s cover. The center of the strap itself is sewn unto a horizontal strap, with a single-pronged metal buckle and leather retaining loop to one end, and four buckling holes to the other, which encircles the neck. The spring hook on this 1917 pattern harness allowed the canteen to be attached to a "D" ring on the belt or breadbag. All of the leather components have stiffened with age, and all of its metal elements exhibit moderate to heavy surface spotting. The dark brown enamel to the interior of its neck appears to be fully retained, but only about half of it is retained to its exterior. The canteen’s cover is made of light brown corduroy, and is fastened along one side by four, moderately surface spotted, metal press studs. Color fading, noticeable stains, and moderate soiling may be seen to the cover, but it is otherwise intact, with only one wear spot and a small tear to its lower front. The body of the canteen has several indentations to it. Although the cork removes easily, the strap encircling the neck and the opening to the cover have not been attempted. Classic example.
