G02353 M1915/17 CANTEEN. (Feldflasche) A .8 liter steel canteen with a tall neck and metal-capped cork stopper, and, as introduced in 1916, an enameled exterior. A leather retaining strap is fixed unto the top of the ribbed metal cap, whose other end passes through a metal spring hook and is sewn unto the horizontal strap which encircles the neck. This simplified strap, introduced in 1917, has a metal, single-pronged roller buckle, with a leather retaining loop, to one of its ends, four buckling holes to the other, and it features a short, vertical extension with a buttonhole-hole to its end. The blackened leather has stiffened with age, and there is noticeable cracking where the buckle mates with the buckling holes. Originally painted field-grey, only about 60% of that presently remains, although that affords a clear view of its underlying blue enamel. There are several spots of wear to the base metal, which have oxidized. Surface spotting is also evident to the spring clip and the cork’s metal cap. Unmarked.
