G02155 M1915/17 CANTEEN. (Feldflasche)
BACKGROUND: The new pattern canteen for the German Army was first introduced in June of 1915. Production now turned to tin plated steel in order to save scarce aluminum that the M1907 canteen used. In 1916 there was yet another modification, in order to save on tin, the canteen would only be coated with it on the inside while the exterior was to be enamel coated.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A .8 liter, tin-plated steel canteen, as introduced in 1915, with a tall neck and metal-capped cork stopper. A leather retaining strap is fixed to the top of the ribbed metal cap whose other end is sewn to the reverse of the neck strap. The neck strap has a metal spring hook to its top and a buttonhole to its base sewn to the canteen cover. Neck strap still retains its original metal buckle. The spring hook allowed the canteen to be attached to a "D" ring on the belt or breadbag. All of the leather components have stiffened with age but are still pliable and intact. The canteen’s cover is made of brown corduroy and is fastened along one side by four metal press studs. The cover and leather fittings are in superb condition.. Near mint. By far the best example I have seen of this example to date.
