G02054 PRUSSIAN EM/NCO'S BELT & BELT BUCKLE. (Koppel und Koppelschloß) An unmarked, 47 1/4" x 1 3/4", blackened leather belt and one-piece construction Prussian buckle. The 2 1/2" x 1 7/8", slightly convex, stamped metal box buckle, features, against its plain, obverse field, a crown to its domed center, encompassed by a dual rope-like border within which, against a ribbed background, is "Gott Mit Uns" (God [is] With Us), and a spray of laurels. It had been painted field grey, as was the practice after January of 1915, although only about 50% of that has been retained to the obverse. To the reverse, which retains at least 75% of its original paint, is its raised buckle catch, and a metal prong bar with dual prongs, for the belt’s retaining tongue. This style of buckle was also also used by the Prussian-dominated states of Baden, Oldenburg, Hansa and Thuringia. An unmarked example. The belt itself has a metal buckle hook riveted to one end, and its other end has a 8 1/4" x 1 7/16" blackened leather retaining tongue sewn to its underside. The tongue has seven pairs of buckling hole along its length, which mate with the dual prongs to the reverse of the box buckle. Most of the blackening has been retained to both the retaining tongue and the exterior of the belt, although both exhibit cracking and chafe wear. It also appears to have been treated, as it is still relatively supple. Unmarked. The belt for the field uniform was originally of tanned leather, but blackened leather was re-introduced in 1915.
