G01854 M1917 GASMASK CANISTER.
(Tragbüchse) A sheet metal canister, 6 3/4" tall with a 4 5/8" diameter, whose exterior is painted olive drab, for the gas mask [19]17, introduced with it in June of that year. A flange is to the forward edge of its shallow cover, which mates with a swiveling wire locking clip to the upper body of the canister itself. The cover has a wire hinge to its reverse. A rectangular, metal "ring" is diagonally brazed to the side of the canister immediately to the right of the locking clip, and another one is similarly brazed immediately to the left of the cover’s hinge, with a third near the base of the canister, between the other two. Through the two upper "rings" would have been fed a carrying strap, and a shorter strap with a reinforced buttonhole to its end would have been fed through the lower ring. A raised, horizontal bead runs along the mid-section of the canister. To its base is embossed "R.F.A.G.," and "L XVI," followed by what appears to be an Imperial eagle, is ink stamped nearby. Its interior is entirely painted in black enamel, and the interior of its cover features a 3 1/4" diameter, 1/2" deep compartment for extra lenses. This compartment has a spring-loaded retaining wire to its interior, and has a convex cover with a lifting tab brazed opposite its wire hinge. Almost all of the black enamel has been retained, with very light usage wear. Over 90% of the olive drab paint to the exterior has been retained, with wear and subsequent light surface spotting to its edges and highlights, along with numerous, small indentations, most noticeable to the upper surface of its cover.GRADE ***3/4 PRICE $233.00
