G016757 M1911 "CAVALRY" AMMO POUCH. (Kartusche für Karabinermunition)

BACKGROUND: The M1911 ammo pouch was based on one of two designs originally developed in 1909. This pattern is the smaller of the two designs and was intended for use by cavalry and mountain troops. Front line personnel were issued two of these, with each pouch holding thirty rounds of 7.92mm ammunition.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A three-pocket, tanned, pebbled leather ammunition pouch, approximately 8" wide, 3 1/2" tall, and 2 1/4" deep. Each of its 2 1/2" wide pockets have a top fold-over flap with a 3/4" x 4 3/8" strap descending from their forward edges. The stud holes to the ends of each of these straps mate with corresponding metal studs to the base of each of the pockets. To either side of the reverse are 3/4" x 5 1/2" straps, riveted at their tops, which pass through horizontal loops riveted to the lower edge of each side of the pouch, and whose free ends have stud holes which mate with the aforementioned studs to the base of the side pockets. These straps act as belt loops. To the upper center of the reverse is sewn and riveted a short leather tab with a metal "D" ring to it. The "D" ring would have attached to a hook on one end of the leather Y-strap, when worn. Impressed to the leather beneath the "D" ring is a hard to read maker name with the location "STUTTGART" and is dated for 1917. To the interior of each of the pockets are horizontal dividers, which would have separated the two five-round clips each pocket would have carried. Pouch is in untouched original condition.
