G013557 CROSS OF HONOR 1914/18 RIBBON BAR.
(Ehrenkreuz des Weltkrieges Kleine Ordensschnalle)BACKGROUND: The Combatant’s Cross of Honor was instituted in July of 1934 by von Hindenburg (resulting in its erroneous designation as the "Hindenburg Cross") to recognize service in WWI. It ranked beneath bravery awards but above other service and campaign awards.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 1 1/8" x 3/4", horizontally ribbed moire ribbon, which has a vertical red stripe running along its center, flanked by black stripes, which are, in turn, flanked by white stripes, and is then edged in black. To its reverse is sewn a small, circular plate, unto which is crimped a horizontal pin-back device. The section of ribbon itself has been folded over eight times to create the "bar." Verdigris is evident to its circular plate, and the ribbon is lightly to moderately age soiled.
