G012956 MODEL 1853 AUSTRIAN FOOT-ARTILLERY/PIONEER'S SWORD.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A model 1853 Austrian Foot-Artillery/Pioneer's Short-Sword that has an overall length of 23 3/4". The single edge blade is just over 18 1/4" long and 2 1/8" wide curving up to a single point with a single fuller and ricasso. Stamped in the ricasso is the makers name "WERNDL", the date "1866" along with "GF" and a proof mark that could be a double headed eagle. The hilt consists of a crossbar crossguard, a wood handle and pommel. The crossguard is about 5 1/8" across with rounded ends and an oval part to the front. Stamped to one side of the guard is "20.D.A.R" above a line while below it is "716" and to the right of that is "7 T D". The wood handle is the same shape as the tang and is held on by four metal nail type rivets. The wood grip is in excellent condition with only a couple of minor marks while the unsharpened blade has light pitting and age darkening and there is a small flattened spot to the edge of the blade and a dent to the back. Overall a very nice example of a rare Pioneer’s sword.
