G012463 BAVARIAN M1915 ARTILLERY KUGELHELM. (Kugelhelm)
BACKGROUND: The Pickelhaube was designed by Friedrich Wilhelm IV and adopted by the Prussia Army in 1842. It was first worn on active duty in 1849, during the suppression of an uprising in Baden. The helmet was modified several times, mostly as a result of field experience garnered during the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars. The kingdom of Bavaria, retaining some measure of independence, was the last of the German states to adopt the Pickelhaube, doing so in 1886.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A stiffened leather helmet with grey metal fittings, onto which is sewn a thick leather visor and rear neck guard. The squared front visor is pinned by dome-headed rivets to either side and is reinforced along its edge by a metal peak mount. Above the visor is positioned the helmet plate (wappen), which depicts two crowned lions, facing away from one another, to either side of a vertical oval with the State Arms of Bavaria within it. A scroll beneath reads "In Treue Fest" (In Loyal Steadfastness), and a crown. Cruciform spike base with removable M1915 ball top. A back spine runs from the rear of the spike base plate to the rim of the neck guard. Side posts are completed. The helmet comes with an original Bavarian korkarden but the national korkarden and chinstrap are copies and should be replaced. The interior liner is of tan-colored leather, stitched around the base of the helmet body, with a seam to its reverse and eight "tongues" or "fingers" arching towards the crown, each of which have holes to their ends through which an adjustable cord passes. Helmet is nicely maker marked and dated for 1915. Roughly a size 56.
