G011256 IMPERIAL GERMAN COMMEMORATIVE CUP. (Becher) A nickel-silver plated metal cup, 2 7/8" in diameter at its open top, tapering to 2 1/8" at its base, and 5 3/4" in height. At a point approximately one-third from the top of the cup is fixed a horizontal, brass band, which widens to form 1 1/8" diameter disks at either of its sides. Within one of the disks is the profiled, head and shoulders portrait of, as is indicated alongside it, "Wilhelm II" (of Germany). Within the other disk is similarly depicted "Franz Joseph I" (of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). Between the two, along the band to one side, is embossed, "Den eisernen Becher, den vollen, weiht / Den eisernen Helden der eisernen Zeit!" (The iron Cup, that [is] full, consecrated / The iron Heroes the iron Time!). To the other band is, "1914," followed by, in very small script, "D.R.G.M." ("Deutsches Reichs Gebrauchsmuster," or, German National Registered-design), then, "Kriegs Becher" (War Cup), followed by, again in very small script, "Ges. Gesch." ("Gesetzlich Geschützt," or, By-law Protected), and, finally, "1915." Although its brass elements exhibit only typical age soiling, its nickel-silver plating, to both the interior and exterior, has numerous, small lifting bubbles and light surface spotting and scratching.
