G010258 S 98 nA COMBAT BAYONET. (Seitengewehr) Second pattern model 1898 bayonet, with the two-piece grips introduced in 1902, known as the S 98 nA ("Seitengewehr 98 neuer Art" - Bayonet ‘98 new Pattern), and its original scabbard. The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 26. Its steel, contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide and locking stud. Its contoured wooden grips each have nine diagonal grooves incised into them, and are fixed by two plain-headed bolts and slot-headed washers. Visible through the rectangular cuts to the base of each grip is a circular cleaning hole. The brazed steel cross guard has a scalloped muzzle guide to its top, and a "quillon," which curves backwards and terminates in a ball tip, extending from its base. The 20" blade, which is 3/4" wide near the guard, has wide fullers along most of its tapering length, and a strengthening "rib" which begins at its back and terminates at the center of its pointed tip. Maker marked to "W.K & C". The 1898 pattern blackened leather scabbard has an overall length of 20 5/8", with its vertical seam to the reverse, and scalloped steel fittings, retained by its original staples, to both its top and bottom. Fittings retain almost all their original nickel silver plating. Very nice untouched example.
