G010257 WÜRTTEMBERG EM/NCO'S PICKELHAUBE. (Pickelhaube)

BACKGROUND: Development of the pickelhaube may be traced back to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV who initiated the original design and introduced it for wear by most of the Prussian line Infantry regiments on October 23RD 1842. The pickelhaube underwent numerous modifications starting in 1860 and continuing right up until 1915. Württemberg was one of the last three German states to adopt the pickelhaube after the formation of the Second Reich in 1871. The Württemberg EM/NCO's pickelhaube conformed to the Prussian style pickelhaube in all respects with the exception of the Württemberg state helmet plate.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: M1895 pattern, EM/NCO’s black lacquered leather helmet. Helmet plate (wappen) features a crowned rampant lion with oak-leaf cluster at its feet and a stag with a laurel leaf cluster at its feet, flanking the Württemberg State coat-of-arms with Imperial crown to top and embossed scripted banner to bottom. Banner is scripted, "Furchtlos und Trew", (Fearless and True). Helmet plate is attached by two metal loops which extend into interior through corresponding holes to pickelhaube front and are secured in place by small leather wedges, one of the leather is missing. Top crown has the circular brass spike base with all four, dome headed, split pin retaining rivets intact. Plain, regulation, fixed pattern, brass spike with five circular ventilation holes to spike neck is also intact. Pickelhaube has an 1895 pattern, vertical brass spine to reverse with movable top ventilation shutter intact. Front visor features brass trim to forward edge secured by a small brass split pin rivet at each corner. Brass M1891 side posts for chinstrap and cockade attachment are also intact. Pickelhaube comes complete with its original blackened leather chinstrap with two rectangular, brass, sliding length adjustment buckles. Right side post has a stamped, fluted, magnetic sheet metal national tri-color cockade in black, white and red. Cockade retains about 99.9% of its original paint. Left side post has a stamped, fluted, magnetic sheet metal, pre-1915 coloration Württemberg state cockade in black, red and black. State cockade also retains 99% of its original paint. Interior of pickelhaube is in age darkened, natural tan leather with a blackened leather liner. Nine finger leather liner shows light chafe wear to edges but is fully intact with all fingers. Liner is in overall good condition and the leather is still fairly supple. Magnetic stamped sheet metal spike base retainer intact to interior crown. Reverse interior neck guard has markings for "122 R III B" (122nd Infantry Regiment) and is dated for 1897. Stitching on the rear left apron had pulled loose, but would be an easy fix if desired. Pickelhaube is in overall excellent nice condition.
