G010158 S 98 aA COMBAT BAYONET. (Seitengewehr) First pattern model 1898 bayonet, with a one-piece grip, known as the S 98 aA ("Seitengewehr 98 alt Art" - Bayonet ‘98 old Pattern), and scabbard. The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 25 3/4". The bayonet’s steel, contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide and locking stud. Its contoured wooden grip has nine diagonal grooves incised into either side of it, and is fixed by two plain-headed bolts and slot-headed washers. The brazed steel cross guard has a scalloped muzzle guide to its top, and a "quillon," which curves backwards and terminates in a ball tip, extending from its base. "108. R. 3. 49" (indicating the 108th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Company) is stamped to the reverse of the cross guard. The 20 1/2" blade, which is 3/4" wide near the guard, has wide fullers along most of its tapering length, and a strengthening "rib" which begins at its back and terminates at the center of its pointed tip. Maker marked "Rheinische Metallwaaren- und Machinenfabrik, Sömmerda". The 1898 blackened leather scabbard has an overall length of 21 1/4", with its vertical seam to the reverse, and scalloped steel fittings, retained by staples, to both its top and bottom. There is one fold mark on the leather near the middle of the scabbard. The lower fitting tapers to a ball tip. Bayonet does not fit all the way into the scabbard, so probably mismatched.
