G00949 SOLDBUCH. (Soldbuch) The sixteen page "Soldbuch," with an additional ten full-length pages glued into it, has its title, in Fraktur, near the top of its 3 1/4" x 5 1/2" cover, above the bearer’s handwritten name and inkstamped unit, the "3. Kompagnie Masch.-Gew.-Scharfsch.-Abtlg. 35." (3rd Company Machine-Gun Sharpshooter Detachment 35) with the "Scharfsch." crossed out. His "Stammrolle" (Personnnel-roster) number is to the base of the cover. To the inside cover are two glued-in sheets of paper, the first headed "Als Ersatz bestimmt für:" (In exchange special[ly] for) with a single entry, the second including a "II. Ersatz-Batl. Landw.-Inf. Regt. No.12 3. Kompagne" (II. Replacement Battalion Reserve Infantry Regiment number 12 3rd Company) inkstamp. A full-page sheet is glued to the first page which has personal information to its obverse and, to the reverse, what appears to be a listing of either civilian clothing received or military clothing issued. To the first page, headed "Nationale des Buchinhabers" (Nationality of-the Book-holder), is the bearer’s name and personal information. On the top of the second page is an indication that the bearer’s "Tag des Entritts in das stehende Heer" (Day of Entry in the standing Army) was in 1904. His personal description is underneath, as is a glued-in piece of paper with a June 1918 date and an "Ersatz-Batallion Landw. Inf. Regiment 35" inkstamp. To the opposite page are glued four full-length pages, none with entries, the first three concerning the bearer’s medical history, the forth completely blank. The page these are glued to has the heading "Inhaber hat zu empfangen:" (Holder has received:) with handwritten entries, in explicable printing and in Sütterlin script, and inkstamps beneath. These entries are continued on the following page. Glued to the next page is a long strip of paper, folded in place, with a listing, in handwritten Sütterlin script, of equipment including "1 Brotbeutel" (1 Bread-bag), "1 Tornister" (1 Knapsack) and "1 Zeltbahn" (Tent-quarter). An "Ers. B. Landw. I. R. 35 III. Komp." inkstamp is also to this page. Underneath the glued-in strip, and to the next four pages are further dated listings and inkstamps. The last seven pages, with no entries, are headed "Nachweisung" (Proof), and concern hospital stays. A full-page sheet of paper is glued to the last page, with the heading "Merkblatt für den Gasschutz" (Leaflet for the Gas-protection) followed by fourteen points. Six half-pages are to the end of the book, the first, headed "Coupons zu dem Soldbuch" (Coupons/vouchers for the Pay-book) has an official stamp from the "Masch.-Gew.-Scharfschützen Abteilung No. 35," the bearer’s name, and the indication that it is for the beginning of January, 1917 until the end of December of the same year. Months from April to September are along the cut edge of the half-page, with the following half-page having the months from October to March. A similar page to the first follows, dated between the beginning of October, 1917 until the end of September, 1918. Months from October to March are along the cut edge of the half-page, with the following half-page having the months from April to September. The next, loose, half page is dated between the beginning of April, 1918 until the end of March, 1919. Months from October to March are along the cut edge of the half-page, with the following half-page having the months from April to September. An un-torn section of the page remains opposite the March and September boxes, each with "Monatsdrittel" (Monthly-third) to them. Yet another double half-page is included loosely at the end of the book, this one, the only one without an official stamp, dated between the beginning of October, 1915 and the end of September, 1916. Months from October to March are along the cut edge of the half-page, with the following half-page having the months from April to September. Glued between these half-pages are two sheets of paper, one vertical and the other horizontal. The vertical sheet is entitled "Auszug aus dem Armee=Verordnungsblatt Nr. 6 Seite 56." and is subtitled "Jeder Mann muß wissen!" (Each Man must know!). The folded, horizontal sheet is entitled "Gesundfeitsmerkblatt" (Health-leaflet). Regulations concerning the use of the Soldbuch are to the inside of the back cover. The publisher’s name and address are to the back cover. Typical age yellowing is to the pages, and soiling to the covers, with some wear to the spine.
