G009057 ERSATZ COMBAT BAYONET. (Seitengewehr) An "ersatz" (substitute) bayonet and its scabbard, made in answer to shortages by a machine shop from stamped or cast parts. The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 14 3/4". Its steel hilt has a contoured bird’s head pommel, with a stud guide and locking stud, and "208" is stamped along one side of its grip. A circular cleaning hole is visible to either side of the base of the grip. The combined grip and pommel has an overall patina of light surface spotting to it, and it is noticeably surface scratched and lightly pitted. The brazed steel cross guard has a circular muzzle guide to its upper extension. Although it has worn to its base metal along its edges, traces of what must have been the original blackening to the hilt and cross guard may be seen where the two meet. The approximately 9 7/8" long, single-edged blade, which is 1" wide near the guard, has wide fullers along most of its length, and comes to a point with a swedge. The bright blade has dulled with age, and it too has an overall patina of light surface spotting to it. Its sheet steel scabbard has perforations for a throat screw near either side of its mouth, beneath which, to one side, is a raised frog lug, and there are flanges extending from each of its sides along its 10 5/8" length, which tapers near its end towards a broken tip. Although most of its original blackening appears to have been retained, it is difficult to distinguish it from the overall age darkening. It has worn to the base metal along its edges and highlights, though, and is moderately surface scratched and indented throughout.
