G006358 "REICHSWEHR" OFFICER’S M1915 SERVICE TUNIC. (Dienstrock) First introduced in September of 1915, the field grey wool tunic features a single-breasted front fly closure leading to a contrasting field-grey collar with a triple hook and eye closure at the throat, angled slash hip pockets with buttonholed flaps and buttons, and turned-up French cuffs. The six buttons to the concealed front closure are all 13/16" in diameter, of what appears to be either tan-colored bakelite or horn. The 11/16" diameter metal buttons to the hip pockets, as well as the 7/8" diameter ones to either side of the 12" tall tail skirt vent, each have Imperial crowns embossed to their convex obverses. "Extra Fein" (Extra Fine) is stamped around the central eyes to each of their reverses. Those to the pockets have retained most of their gold coloration, but that is mostly absent from the others. All of the buttons appear to have their original stitching. The tunic is without shoulder straps, but has provisional rank insignia, introduced in 1919, to the left sleeve immediately above its French cuff. It takes the form of three, horizontal, dark blue stripes, two narrow ones above one thicker one, indicating the rank of "Hauptmann" (roughly equivalent to a Captain). Over the thicker stripe are affixed the gold-colored metal numbers "144," which fulfilled the same function as those earlier worn on shoulder straps. Three vertical loops are to the left breast, beneath which are two horizontal loops, and a column of five horizontal loops are beneath and to the right of that. These facilitated the attaching of awards. The tunic’s interior is fully lined in medium grey rayon, but for its sleeves, which are lined in striped white rayon. A loop is above the entrance to reach sleeve, there is a horizontal slash pocket to the left breast, and vertical slash pockets are to either side of the tail skirt vent. Unmarked. Both its interior and exterior exhibits only light age and usage soiling, with typical nap wear to the wool, but no moth nips, tears or repairs. A rare tunic, in excellent condition. Roughly a size 36.
