G004856 M1917 GASMASK & CANISTER. (Gasmaske M17 mit Blechbüchse) The 1917 pattern, heavily oiled leather mask, with the smooth side to the interior. The leather is still quite supple. All of the retaining straps and fabric covered springs are intact. The owner has handwritten his name to one straps. The magnetic sheet metal eye sockets, with age yellowed clear lenses, are all intact. The lenses have a separate cut-out sheet metal "sight," consisting of a central circle with six retaining arms, emanating from the center to the edges. A field-grey painted, sheet metal filter attachment fitting is to the mask bottom. The fitting retains about 85% of its field-grey paint, has the embossed script, "H3," and the inkstamped numerals, "111." The field-grey painted sheet metal breathing filter retains about 80% of its paint, with areas of heavy surface spotting and pitting. The filter has an illegible red inkstamp, and the legible black inkstamp: "B7.Juni 18," and "11.C.11." The 1917 pattern sheet metal carrying canister is roughly 6 3/4" tall with a 4 5/8" diameter. The canister has a horizontal raised lip to the center, with a vertical crimped and brazed seam to the reverse. The top lid has a fold back, swivel wire attachment ring and pressure closure clip. The canister retains 70% of its original field-grey paint, with moderate to heavy surface spotting throughout, and one dent. The canister has faint, illegible remnants of hand painted script to the top lid. The carrying straps are absent. The black painted interior has a circular hinged lid compartment to the reverse of the top lid. This compartment contains one spare eye socket lens.
