G004659 SAXON MEDICAL EM'S VISOR CAP. (Schirmmütze)
BACKGROUND: The Freiwillige Krankenflege (Volunteer Medical Assistance Corps) served on all fronts during the First World War. They wore a distinctive grey uniform with the white topped visor cap with the Red Cross. The white pattern cap was replaced mid-war (1916) by a grey version.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Very nice example of a Freiwillige Krankenflege visor with the 1914/16 pattern white top. A cloth Red Cross is stitched to the top center with a Saxon korkarden just below. Feldgrau centerband and red piping. Black vulcanfiber visor is slightly loose, but still nicely held in place. Between the center band and the visor is a, blackened leather chin strap, fixed over each ear by blackened alloy, convex buttons. Leather slider and chinstrap buckle are both complete. To the interior, its 1 1/2" wide reddish brown leather sweatband has a few tears and shows normal period use. The crown is lined in a light blue cloth material. Cap shows typical period use and aging and the white top has yellowed which is typical. Approximately a size 56. This exact visor is photographed on page 719 of Johan Somers book "Imperial German Field Uniforms and Equipment 1907-1918 Vol 2". Overall very attractive hat.
