G004259 IMPERIAL GERMAN COMBATANT'S SOUTH WEST AFRICA SERVICE MEDAL. (Dienst Medaille)

BACKGROUND: Awarded to combatants who fought in the "Herrero" rebellion is South West Africa. An identical medal to this, but in steel, was awarded to non-combatants.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Combatants bronze version. 33mm diameter bronze medal, whose top is raised and perforated to accommodate a brass ribbon suspension ring. Its ribbon is absent. To the obverse of the medal is embossed the profiled head of a woman wearing a winged helmet, with "Suedwest Afrika" arching along the left of the image, and "1904-06" to the right. To the reverse is embossed a crown above "W" and the Roman numerals "II" (for Wilhelm II), underneath of which are crossed swords, and around which arches "Den Siegreichen Streitern" (The Victorious Struggle). Light age darkening and wear to the highlights is evident.
