G003065 LONG BARREL FLARE PISTOL. (Leuchtpistole)
BACKGROUND: Signals equipment of WWI was relatively primitive with morse code telegraphy being the main form of long distance communication followed by the telephone. As a result of these limited communications the flare gun held particular importance as a signaling tool and utilized a wide variety of assorted signal flares with each different type of flare having an instantly recognizable significance. Through-out WWI the standard issue German flare gun was produced by the Mauser armaments firm. The WWI Mauser flare pistol was retained by the German Weimar era Reichswehr until a new design was developed by the Walther armaments firm and adopted in 1928. Of Note: The WWI Mauser flare pistol saw limited use by second line troops during WWII.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tooled, blued steel, construction flare pistol with natural, grained hardwood grips. The pistol features a roughly, 17cm long, 28mm diameter, tooled steel barrel with a hinged, hexagonal shaped receiver end. The bottom edge of the receiver has a traditional pull back trigger with an integral trigger guard. The forward edge of the trigger guard has an additional push, finger lever which activates an internal barrel locking mechanism and also enables the barrel hinge to be folded forward to load the pistol. The top reverse edge of the receiver has a pull back trigger with a pin head activator. The natural grained hardwood grips are secured to the pistol by a single, flush, screw headed bolt. The bottom edge of the grips have a small extended ball retainer with an inset circular lanyard ring. Well worn and used example.
