G001858 IMPERIAL ARTILLERY OFFICER'S DRESS SABER. (Säbel)

BACKGROUND: The Sword/Saber is an age old military tradition, that evolved from a functional weapon into an item of uniform dress ornamentation by the start of WWI. This strong tradition continues in many armies to this day as a symbol of strength and power.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A roughly, 33 1/2" long, slightly curved, drop forged steel construction, nickel/silver plated blade with shallow fullers running three quarters of the way up both sides of the blade and an ornate acid etched Celtic swirl and foliage pattern with assorted military emblems. The etching begins at the bottom of the ricasso and runs down about one third of the length of the blade on both sides and the spine. The military emblems included crossed cannon barrels and swords as well as halberds, flags, suits of armor and drums. The blade is in overall very good condition and is still very clean and bright with minor surface scratching. The reverse ricasso is well marked with the stamped manufacturers logo which consists of two seated squirrels back to back over the initials "C.E.", the logo Carl Eickhorn used during the late 1800's and early 1900's. The red felt blade washer is still intact. The saber has die cast steel langets, cross guard, ferrule, "P", knuckle bow, back-strap and "dove" pommel with a nickel/silver plate finish. The obverse rounded tip, shield shaped langet has a rough flaw where a marking has either been filled in or an emblem has been removed. The reverse langet has stamped to the top where it joins the cross guard with "62.A.1.110" which possibly stands for the 62nd Artillery, 1st Battery, 110th weapon. The integral cross guard features a downward curved, curled tip to one side, and the base of the, "P", knuckle bow to other side. The saber has a black fish skin grip with a central bulge, and repeating, recessed horizontal grooves with dual twisted silver wire wrap flanked at both the top and bottom edges by a dual twisted, fine silver wire wrap. The nickel/silver finish to the hilt fittings is retained about 85% with small spots of wear to the base steel. The saber comes with its original, nickel/silver, sheet steel construction scabbard. The scabbard has a few chips and wear spots and retains about 90% of its nickel/silver plating. The scabbard has an integral drag to the bottom edge and a sweated on horizontal scabbard band near the top edge with a raised rectangular suspension bar to the reverse and a suspension ring to the reverse edge. Both of the small, dome headed throat retaining screws are intact. Stamped into the scabbards obverse side just below the throat is "62.A.1.110" which are the matching numbers from the saber. A nice matching sword and scabbard.
