G001658 WWI FLIGHT HELMET, GLOVES, PANTS & BOOTS. A grouping that consists of a hard shell fight helmet, a pair of leather flight gloves, leather flight pant and leather boots. The flight helmet is a French made Roold Safety Helmet and consists of a cork shell covered with brown painted oilcloth with leather ear flaps and neck protector with a small front visor. There are circular pads on the ear flaps with brass inserts that were used to mount radio earphones. The helmet appears to have modified for motorcycle use as it has a replacement liner, added black felt to the ear flaps and neck protector and the remnants of a Harley Davidson decal to the front. A pair of multi-panel, black kid leather construction gauntlets with long extended cuffs. The gauntlets have a fit adjustment strap on the palm side of each at the wrist with a rectangular, brass metal, roller retaining loop and two male and one female snaps. The female snaps have a black enamel finish, with "Nellah" embossed to them, which is fully retained. The interior of hands of the gauntlets are lined in white wool and the interior of the cuffs have a black varnish which has hardened and is flaking off. The gauntlets show light to moderate chafe wear and age and usage toning with a hole worn to the palm of one and a hole to the thumb on the other. The gauntlets appear to have been treated and are still pliable although the fingers are starting to stiffen. The dark brown leather flight pants have a three button French fly with a hook and eye closure at the waist, two diagonal slash front pockets and a vertical slash with five button closure at the ankles. There are six buttons spaced around the waist for suspenders and two leather adjustment straps to the rear one ending in a two prong buckle embossed with "Prima". The pant are completely lined in a grey, cotton with a few hand stitched repairs to the seams. The exterior of the pants have some light chafing, usage soiling and darkening but the leather appears to have been treated and is still quite pliable. A pair of square toed, blackened leather boots, about 16 1/2" tall from the top of the heel to the top of the leg/calf portion. To either side of the adjustable front, with integral gusset, are seven lacing eyelets with hexagonal steel grommets to the bottom, seventeen lacing hooks and another five lacing holes to the top. Threaded trough the eyelets to the bottom are what appear to be the original leather laces. The boots are surmounted by a 2" wide smooth leather strap from which two horizontal leather buckling straps extend. One of the four grommets to each of these straps mates with the corresponding single-pronged brass roller buckle with retaining loop sewn to a short leather tab to the outside of the cuff. The only markings to the boot are a "46" stamped to the inside sole. The boot are age and usage darkened with usage scratches to the exterior but they appears to have been treated and are still quite flexible with no apparent repairs. Hard to say 100% for sure the original nationality of this set, possibly German. The owner reports the set was found as is in Norway.
