G001558 MODEL 1871/84 BAYONET.
BACKGROUND:
The S 71/84 is considered by most to be the first true knife-bayonet and was used as the pattern for many similar designs.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This is a dress version of the S 1971/84 bayonet. The single edged, unsharpened, nickle-silver plated blade is about 10 1/8" long, with a single fuller and a spear tip point. The straight cross-guard has a complete muzzle ring and a rudimentary quillon to the other side. There is an oval of red cushioning felt to the front of the cross-guard. The single piece hilt has a stylized eagle head pommel with a "T" slot cut into it with a spring loaded release latch but no locking mechanism as the bayonet was never intended to be used in combat. The two piece wood grip is shaped to the tang and is attached by two round head bolts and split nuts. The blackened leather scabbard has an overall length of 11 7/16", with its vertical seam to the reverse, and alloy fittings, retained by staples, to both its top and bottom. The uppermost fitting has, to its obverse, a throat screw and a raised frog lug while the lower fitting tapers to a ball tip. Moderate chafe wear may be seen to the leather of the scabbard. The blade retains almost all its plating with a few minor nicks and some minor surface bubbling while the handle and hilt are in very good condition with a few minor dents to the wood.
