G001157 U-9 & "KAPITÄNLEUTNANT" OTTO WEDDIGEN ARTWORK POSTCARD. (Postkarte) A 5 3/8" x 3 3/8", printed postcard, whose obverse features a sepia-toned painting of a profiled submarine running on the surface, with the Imperial war flag flying from her stern, and several crewmen on deck. A large sailing vessel may be seen in the left background, and a steamship is to the right background, above which is a portrait of a naval officer enclosed by a wreath of oak leaves. "Kapitänleutnant Otto Weddigen der Heldenführer vom "‘U 9‘" (Captain Otto Weddigen the Heroic-leader of-the "U 9") arches over the portrait, and "S.M. Unterseeboot IX." (His Majesty’s ("Seiner Majestät") Submarine (literally, "Under-sea-boat") 9). Otto Weddigen, while in command of U [boat] 9, sank three British cruisers during a single engagement in September of 1914, which won him the Iron Cross. After further successful engagements, he was awarded the "Pour le Mérite," Prussia’s highest award. In March of 1915, the submarine he was then commanding, the U 26, was rammed and sunk by a British Battleship. What must be the printer’s logo may be seen to the lower right of the image. To the reverse is, to the right, a 5 Pfennig "Deutsches Reich" stamp, with an illegible ink stamp partially applied over it, underneath of which is a handwritten address. A handwritten note is to the left, which begins with a 1914 date. Light age yellowing and soiling is evident throughout.
