G001057 OTTO WEDDIGEN ARTWORK POSTCARD. (Postkarte) A 3 1/2" x 5 1/2", printed postcard, whose obverse features a sepia-toned, head and shoulders, drawn or painted portrait of a naval officer, underneath of which is a facsimile of his signature, "Otto Weddigen." While in command of U [boat] 9, Weddigen sank three British cruisers during a single engagement in September of 1914, which won him the Iron Cross. After further successful engagements, he was awarded the "Pour le Mérite," Prussia’s highest award. In March of 1915, the submarine he was then commanding, the U 26, was rammed and sunk by a British Battleship. The artist’s monogram is visible to the lower right of the image. To the reverse is, to the right, "Postkarte" alongside the outline for a stamp, beneath which are lines for an address, and to the left, a space for a brief entry. Along the dividing line between the two halves is the publisher’s name and address. Above the left space is "Marinedank E.V." (Navy-thanks ("Eingetragener Verein") Registered Organization) and "Berlin S. 42" to either side of an encircled drawing of civilians and a sailor with an Imperial war flag in the background. Light age yellowing and soiling is evident throughout, but it has no distracting folds or edge wear.
