G000957 OTTO WEDDIGEN ARTWORK POSTCARD. (Postkarte) A 3 3/8" x 5 1/4", printed postcard, whose obverse features a black and white, head and shoulders, drawn or painted portrait of a naval officer with an Iron Cross, first class, pinned to his breast. Partially printed over his visor cap is his name, "Otto Weddigen," who, while in command of U [boat] 9, sank three British cruisers during a single engagement in September of 1914, which won him the Iron Cross. After further successful engagements, he was awarded the "Pour le Mérite," Prussia’s highest award. In March of 1915, the submarine he was then commanding, the U 26, was rammed and sunk by a British Battleship. The artist’s name is partially visible to the lower right of the image, and the printer’s logo may be seen to the lower left. To the reverse is, to the right, the outline for a stamp, with another logo within it, beneath which are lines for an address, and to the left, a space for a brief entry. Very light age yellowing and soiling is evident throughout, but it has no distracting folds or edge wear.
