G000858 47TH ARTILLERY REGIMENT COMMEMORATIVE TOBACCO PIPE.
(Pfeife) A wood, horn and ceramic pipe, approximately 40" in overall length. The top is comprised of a dark colored horn mouthpiece, which widens immediately before a flexible, 5" long, dark fabric wrapped section, to whose end is a widening, and then sharply tapering, piece of what appears to be ebony. This latter element is fed into a roughly 2 1/4" diameter collar of horn, after which the turned ebony continues, until it disappears into a tulip-shaped section of light colored horn. Turned ebony is beneath the light colored horn, bracketing a square, ebony block, set on its points, with the brass image of a cannon affixed to one face, the brass numbers "47" to another, and, also in brass, "4 Bt" to a third face. After that, where the turned ebony ends, a 13 1/2" section of natural wood and bark begins. Where that ends begins another element in ebony, to whose turned end is a tapering "foot," and from whose side rises the collar that the pipe’s bowl is fed into. The bowl is made of white ceramic, and has a protrusion near its base, above which is molded a bow in the national tri-colors, from either side of which rises a green and brown molded wreath of oak leaves and acorns. The wreath encloses the painted image of five soldiers, all in "Dunkelblau" uniforms and wearing Pickelhaubes, manning a field artillery piece. A red shoulder strap, against which is a flaming bomb and "47," both in yellow, is painted to the base of the image, and "Resv. Gefr. Decher" ("Reserve Gefreiter (a rank roughly equivalent to a Lance-Corporal) Decher") and "Dem Regiment zur Ehr Dem Vaterland zur Wehr" (To-the Regiment for-the Honor To-the Fatherland for-the Defence) is painted above it. To the reverse of the bowl is painted "Andenken an meine Dienstzeit b.d. 4. fahr. Battr. 2. Kurhess. Feld Artl. Regt. Nr. 47. Fulda 1904-1906." (Remembrance of my Service-time with the ("bei dem") 4th mobile ("fahrende") Battery [of the] 2nd Kurhessen Field Artillery Regiment No. 47 [in] Fulda 1904-1906.), beneath which are the names of forty-seven reservists. What must be the artist’s name, with a "Fulda" location, is to the lower right of the list of names. The top of the bowl is ringed in a silver-colored alloy, along whose reverse is the hinge for a brass and tombac, Artilleryman’s Pickelhaube-shaped "cap." A cord, in the national tri-colors, is bound around a ring immediately beneath the hinge, and rises to wrap around the base of the first ebony element above the horn collar. A tassel, again in the national tri-colors, with its "ball" and "slide," descends from where the cord is wrapped. Both the cord and tassel are somewhat color faded and lightly to moderately frayed. All of the brass elements to the Pickelhaube-shaped cap exhibit light verdigris. The ceramic bowl and its painted details are in excellent, unmarred condition. All of the wood and horn elements of the pipe are lightly surface scratched and age soiled, and there is a small piece absent from the pipe’s "foot." Unique.GRADE **** PRICE $476.00
