G000857 OTTO WEDDIGEN ARTWORK POSTCARD. (Postkarte) A 3 9/16" x 5 1/2", printed postcard, whose obverse features the color reproduction of a painting of a decorated naval officer, with moderate seas in the background, an Imperial war flag flapping in the wind over and behind his head, and a life preserver with "U 9" to it partially visible to the lower left. His shoulder boards establish his rank as that of a "Kapitänleutnant" (Captain), and he has a 1914 Iron Cross, second class, fed through a buttonhole on his double-breasted tunic, and a "Pour le Mérite" suspended from his neck. The painting is that of Otto Weddigen, who, while in command of U [boat] 9, sank three British cruisers during a single engagement in September of 1914, which won him the Iron Cross. After further successful engagements, he was awarded the "Pour le Mérite," Prussia’s highest award. In March of 1915, the submarine he was then commanding, the U 26, was rammed and sunk by a British Battleship. To the reverse is, to the right, "Postkarte" alongside the outline for a stamp, beneath which are lines for an address, and to the left, a space for a brief entry. Above this space is printed "Unser Weddigen" (Our Weddigen), beneath which is noted that the original painting is housed in the town hall of Weddigen’s birth place. "15" within a box, and the publisher’s name and address, are to the base of the space. Light age yellowing and soiling is evident throughout, but its colors are still bright, and it has no distracting folds or edge wear.
