G000557 6CM NAVAL SHELL CASING. (Patronenthülse) A brass shell casing, with a base diameter of 2 7/8", and an overall height of 2 1/2". Its inside diameter is little better than 2 7/16", which would be consistent with a 6cm shell. To the center of its base is a 1 1/4" diameter primer, which has three semi-circular indentations along its circumference, with "C/12" stamped between two of them. "Patronenfabrik" (Cartridge-factory) arches above the primer, and "Karlsruhe" (the manufacturer’s or factory’s name), bracketed by what appears to be sunburst motifs, arches beneath it. A crowned "M" (indicating its use by the "[Kaiserliche] Marine," or, Navy) is stamped over the first inscription, and "151" (most likely the lot number) is stamped beneath the second. "V" (possibly the month (May) of its manufacture) is stamped to the left of the primer, and "1917" (the year of its manufacture) is to its right. The casing has the typical patina encountered in old brass, but is otherwise intact. Whether this was cut down from a longer shell, or was some kind of blank cartridge, is difficult to determine.
