G000357 S 98/05 nA COMBAT BAYONET WITH FROG. (Seitengewehr) A second pattern model 1898/05 bayonet, with the flash guard along the back of its grips introduced in 1915, known as the S 98/05 nA ("Seitengewehr 98/05 neuer Art," or, Bayonet ‘98/’05 new Pattern), with its original scabbard and leather frog. The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 19 3/4". Its blued steel, contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide and locking stud, with two inspection marks, both in the form of a crowned, Gothic letter "B," stamped above the reverse of the stud. Another inspection mark is to the stud itself. Its contoured wooden grips each have nine diagonal grooves incised into them, and they are fixed by two plain-headed bolts and slot-headed washers. Visible through the rectangular cuts to the base of each grip is a circular cleaning hole. A sheet steel flash guard runs along the top of the grips between the stud guide and cross guard, and another inspection stamp may be seen to its end near the stud guide. The steel cross guard has a scalloped muzzle guide to its top, and a "quillon," which curves backwards and terminates in a ball tip, extends from its base. All of the bluing to the metal elements of the hilt has worn and created a mottled patina. The 14 1/2" bright blade, which is 1" wide near the guard, and widens to 1 5/16" before tapering to a point, has wide fullers along most of its length. A cypher comprised of a crown over a "W" (most likely for King Wilhelm II (1888-1918) of Prussia, or possibly King Wilhelm II of Württemburg (1891-1918)) with "16" (the acceptance date) beneath that, and another inspection mark in the form of a crowned, Gothic letter "B," are stamped to the back of the blade near the ricasso. The number "2" is stamped just before the blade’s edge, to the other side, also near the ricasso. The maker’s name and location is stamped to the reverse ricasso, being "V.C.Schilling Suhl." The blade exhibits light surface scratching and spotting, and equally light scabbard runner marks. Its blued, sheet steel scabbard, adopted in 1915, has a throat screw and a raised frog lug near its mouth, and tapers along its 15 1/4" length to a ball tip. An indistinguishable stamp may be seen to the reverse of its ball tip. Although most of its bluing appears to have been retained, it has light surface spotting, and more moderate pitting, throughout. The scabbard is slid unto its original, blackened leather frog. The frog is comprised of two pieces, the first a "pocket," open at its top and bottom and with a hole for the scabbard’s stud to its front, either of whose sides are sewn and riveted onto the second piece, a backing which folds down upon itself, forming a belt loop, where it is sewn and fixed by rivets. To the reverse of the belt loop is impressed, within a horizontal oval, the manufacturer’s name and location, "J. Bomberg Mühlhausen I. Th.," enclosing the date, "1918." The frog has retained all of its original blackening, and is still supple, with only light cracking visible near its stud hole.
