H30155 SPLINTER PATTERN CAMOUFLAGE NON-REVERSIBLE WINTER HOOD. (Kopfhaube) 

BACKGROUND: The development of camouflage clothing and equipment had began in the German army in WWI, and continued through the Weimar Reichswehr era. The geometric splinter pattern was developed in the early 1930's and was first adopted for use with the quarter shelter/poncho in late 1931. Further developments modified the original splinter pattern by softly blurring the distinct geometric pattern and slightly altering the coloration. This modified camouflage pattern was designated the Tan/water camouflage and was once again altered by an even stronger blurring of the distinct geometric pattern during the war. After the winter of 1941 on the Russian front the German high command saw the need for heavier winter clothing and testing began in the spring of 1942 to develop suitable garments. In April 1942 Hitler approved the chosen design, and the first models were issued in the autumn of that year, in the reversible blue/grey/white colorations, which was modified to camouflage pattern/white combinations in 1943. Of Note: These garments were also produced in non-reversible models. The winter hoods were a standard issue item and were distributed to all EM/NCO’s for the winter season, (September 15^TH to April 15^TH), with other winter garments and were to be returned to the units storage depot at the end of the season for reissue the following year. Originally Officers and senior NCO’s responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and headgear were required to purchase the new winter garments until regulations of December 1942 extended the issue winter clothing to all ranks in the colder theatres of operation. 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Non-reversible, waterproofed cotton duck and rayon blend construction hood with printed, geometric, splinter pattern camouflage to one side in shades of greens, tans, and browns with an internal padding. The hood is cut in nine, machine stitched, panels with five panels for the actual hood and an additional four panels for the neck and shoulder cowling. Each side of the hood has an elongated vertically oval ear panel which reveals the internal ersatz padding. The ear panels were designed to retain warmth while still allowing the wearer to hear. The hood has an extended section to the left front panel, with five vertical tapering darts and the remnants of dual grey rayon tie tapes with an HBT, (Herring Bone Twill), weave. The right front panel also has four vertical tapering darts. The tie tape was designed to go around the wearers neck and tie in the front center for a secure closure. The bottom edge of the hood has an extended, four panel, neck and shoulder cowl. The hood and cowl were designed to be snugly form fitting, and retain the maximum amount of warmth. The interior of the hood is fully lined in two shades of blue/grey rayon. The lining shows moderate age and usage toning and moisture staining and has a couple of fair sized tears. The exterior of the hood shows light to moderate age and usage toning and a few small picks and pulls. The hood has no visible manufacturers or size markings and is roughly size 55.
