H092660 "NOTEK" VEHICLE BLACK-OUT LIGHT SET. (Kraftfahrzeuge Verdunkeln Lampe)
BACKGROUND: As a security precaution, laws were imposed that all vehicles, both military and civilian, were required to mask their lights when night driving was permitted. This was accomplished by a wide variety of expedient measures on civilian vehicles and the more permanent measure of a factory manufactured black-out lights, on most military vehicles. The Notek, (Nova Technik), manufacturing firm was contracted to produced the required vehicle "black-out" light fixtures for military vehicles. Notek developed a uniquely simple and effective "black-out" vehicle lights that where fitted on almost all military vehicles. This pattern of hooded light was used on a variety of vehicles from reconnaissance cars to armored fighting vehicles.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tooled sheet metal and steel construction, vehicular "Notek" black-out light. Light consists of a slightly convexed top, oval shaped hood with a flat forward edge measuring roughly, 9 1/2" long and, 6 3/8" wide, with, 2 1/2" tall, outward flaring side panels with a, 1 1/4" tall scalloped front section. The hood is attached to a base by three threaded bolts with corresponding nuts and washers. The base of the light is roughly, 5" long, 6 3/8" wide and 2 1/2" tall. The front edge of the light base has a, 4 1/4" wide, 1/2" tall, cut-out, with heavy fluted glass panel, to protect the interior light bulb. The top hood extends beyond the light base by about, 5" which adequately conceals the light beam, while still allowing the driver the light required to drive. The bottom of the light base has a vertically extended center section with heavy bolted swivel stand with a 3 1/2" diameter circular base. The circular base has three tooled bolt holes to attach the light to a vehicle. The vehicle attachment bolts and two rubber washer are also included. The top front of the hood has an embossed manufactures logo and name, "Notek". The top of the hood also has hand painted, white script, "12 Volt" and the bottom edge of the hood has white stenciled numerals, "808". Set also comes with the original rear tail light. Roughly, 3 5/8" tall, 7" wide, 2" thick, field-grey painted, stamped magnetic sheet metal construction "black-out" vehicle tail light with internal electrical components and light bulbs. The front of the light has four, small, uniquely spaced, vertical windows with glass faces positioned at the top edge and two small, horizontally oval, windows with one red and one orange glass face positioned at the bottom edge. The front has a central, horizontal, door with an internal, staggered bar hinge. The door could be flip in the upper position to mask the green lights or in the bottom position to mask the red and orange lights as required. The side panels of the light each have four, small, brazed, on horizontal, sheet metal tabs that secure the hinged door in either the upright or down positions. The bottom edge of the light has a small, clear class licence plate illumination window with a friction fit, sliding door that can be slid to either an on or off position to mask the light. The reverse of the light has dual, horizontally extended, vehicle attachment screws and an electrical wire port with an inserted, waterproofing rubber seal. The reverse also has a black inkstamp, "12 Volt". The interior appears to have all the electrical components and light bulbs intact. The set retains about 80% of its original ordnance tan paint. Also included with the set is the original Notek instruction/operation manual (water damaged), and also the original package cardboard inserts/coverings. The set is 100% matching and was recently discovered in France after 65 years. Rare to see such a complete outfit. Nice!
