BACKGROUND: The German army used a wide variety of optical enhancement items with the 6 x 30 power, (6 power magnification with a 30mm diameter objective lens), binoculars being the standard issue optics utilized by all branches of service. Although the 6 x 30 power binoculars were the standard issue, specialized personnel such as Artillery observers, Reconnaissance personnel, Searchlight personnel, etc., required stronger optics and assorted larger power binoculars were issued to these specialized personnel on a limited basis.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Large, tooled alloy and aluminum construction, 10 x 50, power, binoculars. The lens bodies retain about 75% of their original, rough textured, black finish and the aluminum end piece fittings retain about 80% of their original, smooth, black painted, finish with small spots of wear to the base alloy of each. The eye sockets are intact and the focus adjustment still functions. The standard screw on, bakelite eye pieces have been removed. The bottom edge of the lens bodies each have a small, raised, cut-out bar designed to secure a shoulder strap. The shoulder strap is absent. The optics are still fairly crisp and clear with minor smokiness. The optics have no reticle pattern. The central lens joining bracket with swivel width adjustment is intact and still functions. The right hand side, ocular end, body panel is well marked with the impressed designation, "Dienstglas 10 x 50", (Service Glasses), a serial number, "8401", the manufacturer’s three letter code, "blc" indicating manufacture by Carl Zeiss Militarabteilung of Jena and a "+" lubricant code, indicating lubricant type 1442 which was effective in temperatures as cold as -40 degrees Celsius.
