H085463 TELEPHONE/WIRELESS RADIO STATION FLAG. (Fernsprecher/Funkstelle Flagge)

BACKGROUND: Along with the numerous field command and unit flags utilized by the German army were specific directional flags used at field headquarters to indicate the location of key services such as medical and signals posts. Of Note: See Paul Carell’s book "Operation Barbarosa in Photographs", page 92, for a photographic example of one of these flags in use.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly 50cm tall, 40cm wide, dual ply, double sided, cotton construction directional flag. Flag features a red base field with a large white stencil painted, "F" indicating either, Fernsprecherstelle, (Telephone Station), or Funkstelle (Wireless Radio Station), above a white directional arrow, to center of each side. One side of the flag also has two small black inkstamps with one inkstamp having script and numerals, "Tel; 29", flanking a shield shaped base with rampant lion. Inkstamp appears to be of Czechoslovakian origin and may indicate capture and usage by the Germans. Top and bottom edge of flag each have a 42cm long, 1.5cm diameter, nailed on, wooden dowel to facilitate hanging. Top edge wooden dowel has small drilled holes near each outside edge with two twisted twine hanging ropes and bottom edge dowel has a central drilled hole with an additional twisted twine securing rope. Center of top dowel also has a natural tan leather tab with single stud hole. Nice example, scarce.
