H079963 OFFICER'S VEHICLE PENNANT.

Following an age old military tradition the German Armed Forces of the Third Reich era utilized a wide variety of identifying flags and pennants to distinguish Officers and Headquarters and included specific flags and pennants for use by Officers who command units as varied in size as the Army High Command down to Battalion sized units. Generally the flags and pennants were designed utilizing the basic, unit size, tactical map symbols and the appropriate waffenfarbe, (Branch of Service Color). On November 10TH 1934 the OKH, Oberkommnado des Heeres, (High Command of the Army), introduced the national eagle vehicle pennant for use by all Officers and Officials with Officer’s ranks/positions, as an identifying emblem of rank. The vehicle pennant was to be flown from the left, front, fender of all official military or privately owned, personal vehicles when the Officer was uniformed and present. The national eagle pennant was utilized by Officers who were not authorized a unit command or staff pennant. Additional regulations on August 13TH 1936 prescribed the addition of white border trim to the pennants. Further regulations of September 8TH 1938 also dictated that the vehicle flying the pennant be of German manufacture and in good condition. Most commonly the pennants were stiffened with an internal wire frame or an exterior, clear celluloid cover. The non-stiffened pennants are usually associated with use on private vehicles as opposed to military vehicles.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Roughly, 7 1/4", (8.3cm), tall at the hoist end, 12 3/4", (32.4cm), long, horizontal, isosceles triangle, woven, dual-ply, subtly ribbed, faded, field-grey cotton twill construction, dual sided, pennant features a hand embroidered national eagle, with out-stretched wings, clutching a wreathed, canted, swastika in it’s talons in silvery/white rayon threads with black accent threads to each side. The eagle shows nice detailing and has a wingspan of roughly, 6", (15.2cm), from wingtip to wingtip. The outer edges of the pennant are trimmed with a narrow strip of twisted, white rayon cording which is machine stitched in place in the typical zig-zag fashion. The hoist edge of the pennant has a tunnel looped, white cotton bunting for the suspension rope. The twisted, off-white, suspension rope is partially intact and is looped at the top edge. The pennant has no internal frame or celluloid covering. The pennant is in overall good although it shows considerable color fading to a light tan coloration which could be construed as a tropical version, but folding back the hoist edge bunting shows the original, darker field-grey color.GRADE ***1/2 PRICE $472.00
