(Kartenwinkelmesser mit Tasche)BACKGROUND: Map/dispatch cases were issued on a limited basis to specifically designated personnel such as unit commanders, messengers, and observers. When issued the map/dispatch cases came complete with an assortment of map reading and plotting tools including a protractor which was issued in a protective pouch. The map protractor was used by placing the center cross hairs on a selected position on a map, the compass bearing to your target or destination, can be calculated by moving the protractor arm, and then reading the calibrations.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice quality, tooled aluminum alloy construction map plotting protractor is roughly, 14cm in diameter with a cut-out center with a central flat bar with a raised circular centerpiece and a small, inserted glass panel with crosshairs markings. The circular centerpiece also has an extended, hinged, swivel arm that overlaps the outer edge ring. The outer edge ring features dual impressed grid scales, with the outer scale utilizing the, "1" to "6,400" scale with the increment numerals marked at the hundreds and the inner scale utilizing the, "10" to "400" scale with the increment numerals marked at the tens. The central hinged, swivel arm overlaps the outer ring and has a small view port with dual increment markings consisting of, "0" to "5", and "0" to "100". The hinged, swivel arm is well marked with a stamped waffen-amt, the manufacturers name "Wichmann" and the serial number, "A7440". The protractor is in overall excellent condition and fully functional. The protractor comes housed in its original, roughly, 17cm tall, 15.5cm wide, 3cm thick, pressed cardboard construction, "U" shaped storage case with a machine stitched coarse blue/grey canvas covering. The case has machine stitched outer seams and features a fold back top lid with dual magnetic sheet metal closure snaps. The front body of the case is well marked with the white inkstamped designation abbreviation, "K.W. 140 ", indicating, Kartenwinkelmesser 140, (Map Protractor {model} 140), the manufactures three letter code "cwu", and a faint black inkstamped waffen-amt. Nice map/dispatch case accessory. Scarce.
