H071859 M34 "PONY FUR" BACKPACK.
(Tornister)BACKGROUND: Based on the earlier Prussian back pack, this model was introduced in November of 1934, with minor variations. The M39 backpack was introduced on April 18TH 1939 as a replacement for M34 backpack. The two packs were very similar, but the M34 had integral carrying straps while the M39 was designed for use with the then newly introduced Y-straps. During the war the early M34 and M39 "pony fur" backpacks were found to be too expensive and time consuming to produce which resulted in the production of a wide variety of less expensive canvas construction combat rucksacks and backpacks although both the M34 and M39 packs were manufactured through-out the war in limited quantities.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An olive drab canvas pack with leather and cowhide fittings, roughly 11" wide, 12" tall and 4" deep, with a fold-over flap that covers its entire front. Decent fur coverage to the main flap. One small central strap is missing, but all the others for attaching extra equipment are complete. The two main straps interior straps are present, one has been shortened and the other is quite dry. All of the rest of the straps, buckles and buttons are in quite good condition. Nicely Rbn# marked and dated for 1943. Decent example that shows period use and wear.
