H058758 COMBAT ENGINEER COMPANY FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH. (Photographie)

BACKGROUND: Basic human instinct dictates that soldiers in the field, regardless of nationality, long for their loved ones at home. As a result it was very common for these soldiers to have themselves photographed and send the photos home. As today, there were also numerous other reasons to pose for a photograph, new appointments, promotions, weddings anniversaries etc., etc.. This example appears to be an official, commemorative, unit photograph.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 6 1/2" tall, 8 3/4" wide, posed, black and white photograph of all the members of a Combat Engineer Company, wearing visor caps and M35 dress tunics, positioned in front of a large barracks type building. Although small, the uniform and insignia details are all clearly visible. The photograph is mounted on a tan mat underlay with black printed artwork and script. The artwork includes a national war flag and figures that appear to be constructing a bridge. The script consists of, "Zur Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit", (In Memory of my Service time), and, "3.{mot.} Kompanie Pion. Batl. 47 München 1937", (3RD {Motorized} Company 47TH Combat Engineer Battalion Munich 1937). The photograph is in overall very good condition with minimal age yellowing. The photograph comes housed in a roughly, 15 1/2" tall, 18 1/4" wide, period, stained wooden frame with a clear glass face. Unfortunately one end of the wooden frame has separated but is included.
