H057557 SIGNALMAN'S BACKPACK. (Fernsprechtornister)
BACKGROUND: Based on the M39 "Tornister," but larger and with dual closure flaps. The backpack would contain the necessary equipment for the Signalman, such as cable reels and various tools. There were three versions of the backpack, "1,2,3", with each having different interiors.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The pack measures 16" x 13" x 4", and has an internal wooden frame. Its exterior is covered in brown cowhide and is trimmed in tan leather. The top closure flap has two wide, tanned leather closure straps that taper to a narrower section. Each strap has six "slotted" cut outs that would be for connecting to a corresponding raised steel bar. The straps also have a stitched on auxiliary strap with a riveted flat steel bar that would then "slide" through the raised steel bar to secure the main straps. The front of the larger bottom flap has six vertical, stitched-on leather loops, and a layered patch of tan leather with the cut-out numeral "2" over a blackened leather underlay. The left side of the backpack has three, riveted on leather loops and the right side has one, riveted on leather loop. These were meant to carry additional equipment. The reverse, top edge of the backpack has a tanned leather strip stitched on with two non magnetic alloy rivets in the middle. The leather strip has two swivel-armed rivets that each secure a tanned leather carrying strap with a steel quick release hook. The leather strip is also clearly marked with the letters and date "gxy 1941" indicating manufacture by Gebrüder Klinge Lederwaren-Fabrik Dresden-Löbtau in 1941. The straps have three holes that are meant to be able to adjust the quick release hooks to whatever height was required. The bottom of the backpack has a tanned leather reinforcement strip stitched on and also a canvas strip to which is sewn on two leather reinforced quick release hooks. The reverse of the larger, lower flap, has one large canvas pocket with, two smaller pockets, and a tubular, stitched-in leather pocket with a studded snap closure. The canvas pocket would have had two leather straps attached to it, but these straps are missing. The interior is sectioned off into four separate sections, with rivetted in, sheet metal separators. One of the sections have rivetted in, leather retaining strap. The pack is in overall very good condition with minor chafe and wear. All of the leather is still quite supple.
