H057458 MILITARY VEHICLE "NOTEK" BLACK-OUT TAIL LIGHT. (Abstandsrücklicht)
BACKGROUND: As a security precaution, laws were imposed that all vehicles, both military and civilian, were required to mask their lights when night driving was permitted. This was accomplished by a wide variety of expedient measures on civilian vehicles and the more permanent measure of a factory manufactured black-out lights, on most military vehicles. The Notek, (Nova Technik), manufacturing firm was contracted to produced the required vehicle "black-out" light fixtures for military vehicles. Notek developed a uniquely simple and effective "black-out" vehicle tail light that was fitted on almost all military vehicles. The "black -out" vehicle tail light was equipped with four small windows that emitted a dim greenish light, an additional standard red tail light window and an orange brake light window and a clear licence plate illumination window. The vehicle operator would be ordered to shut off either the green, or red and orange lights as conditions required. The green lights were designed so that at a distance of roughly 300 meters they would be perceived as a single light, while at a distance of roughly 35 meters two lights would be visible and at a distance of roughly 25 meters all four lights would be visible. For convoy driving the drivers would be instructed to distance their vehicles so that two light were visible, (roughly 25 meters), on the forward vehicle. If a single light was visible the driver would know he was too far behind the forward vehicle and if all four lights were visible the driver would know he was too close behind the forward vehicle. At distances over 300 meters the lights were not visible. Of Note: The Notek pattern "black-out" vehicle tail lights continued to be produced in both Denmark and Czechoslovakia after the war, but the post-war examples don’t have the Notek logo/name marking.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 3 5/8" tall, 7" wide, 2" thick, field-grey painted, stamped magnetic sheet metal construction "black-out" vehicle tail light with internal electrical components and light bulbs. The front of the light has four, small, uniquely spaced, vertical windows with glass faces positioned at the top edge and two small, horizontally oval, windows with one red and one orange glass face positioned at the bottom edge.
