H043658 ISSUE HELMET CAMOUFLAGE NETTING. (Stahlhelmtarnnetz)
BACKGROUND: Although the German army had introduced a splinter patterned camouflage helmet cover, along with other camouflage clothing items in early 1942 it was deemed that the addition of natural foliage was more cost efficient and effective so on August 10TH 1942 the helmet camouflage netting was introduced. The camouflage helmet netting was designed to fit loosely on a helmet and allowed the individual to secure natural foliage to the helmet as camouflage.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Rectangular shaped, unbleached, natural tan, twisted cord netting with evenly spaced knots creating a repeating, open, diamond pattern. The netting has an all around, yellow drawstring inserted through the net openings near the outside edges and tied near the front center. The reverse of the drawstring has an inserted, circular, metal ring designed to tighten the netting to the helmet. The netting was designed to hang down below the front visor of the helmet to provide additional facial camouflage. Each side of the front overhang has a small, crimped, metal hook designed to hold back the facial camouflage when not in use. When spread out and laid flat the netting is roughly 21" x 18". The netting is in overall very good condition with all the components intact and light to moderate age and usage toning. Scarce issue camouflage helmet netting.
