H039665 BÉZARD SMALL ARMEE MODEL 1906 I CIVIL COMPASS. (Kompass) John Ritter von Bézard patented the compasses in several countries at the same time including the German Empire, Hungary, England, France, Russia, Switzerland, North America and Japan. The German version of the Bézard was manufactured by the barometer manufacturer Georg Luft. This small civl compass is in the original two piece, hinged cardboard box that lists the countries with patents to the right of the cover, as well as stating the D.R.P. (Deutches Reichs Patent) number. Instructions are printed inside both top and bottom lids. The aluminum constructed compass is secured within a black leather, ribbed pouch with flap and black snap. The compass has a black nylon cord that extends from the top ring, through a slot in the flap to secure the compass while carrying. "Direktion" is etched to the aluminum hinged lid above a key hole opening. The civil compass was made up of 360 degrees. The arrow shaped pointer is glued in place on a magnetic needle with wax. The inside lid, as in other early model’s, has a cardboard arrow attached by two screws. This was used to indicate the marching direction. The reverse of the casing shows "Patent-Bézard" "D.R.P.-157329" which is the patent for the German Empire (November 25, 1902). Also present is the maker mark for Georg Luft.
