H03954 TWO M1929 TENT PEGS.
(Zwei Zeltpflock)BACKGROUND: Along with the standard issue M31 Zeltbahn, (Quarter shelter/poncho), each soldier was also equipped with tenting accessories that consisted of the M1892 tent rope, the three piece M1901 breakdown tent pole, and two M1929 tent pegs enabling the individual to utilize his Quarter shelter with others to form a tent. Normally these tenting accessories would be carried in the individual’s backpack or rucksack although there was a specially designed carrying bag for these items that was issued on a limited basis. The early issue tent pegs were constructed of metal or metal alloy’s while later production tent pegs were generally manufactured in molded bakelite, plastic impregnated wood or plain wood.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Two, roughly, 10 1/8" tall, 5/8" wide, injection molded, natural aluminum alloy construction, issue M1929 pattern tent pegs. The tent pegs feature a rounded obverse and a hollowed reverse with a central raised, vertical reinforcement spine. Both of the tent pegs have a trapezoidal shaped top headpiece with a vertically oval, guide rope cut-out to each and pointed bottom tips. The guide ropes are absent. Both of the tent pegs are well marked on the obverse of the headpieces with impressed manufacturers initials and the date, "S.& C. 38", indicating an unknown manufacturer in 1938. One of the tent pegs shows light to moderate pitting and light oxidization spotting.
