H028559 M34 "PONY FUR" BACKPACK. (Tornister)
BACKGROUND: Based on the earlier Prussian back pack, this model was introduced in November of 1934, with minor variations.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An olive drab canvas pack with leather and cowhide fittings, roughly 11" wide, 12" tall and 4" deep, with a fold-over flap that covers its entire front. The fur covered flap, which is edged with brown leather, has a 2 3/8" wide, brown leather loop horizontally sewn to its upper face. Brown leather straps, with buckling holes, descend from either side of the flap’s leading edge. These straps would mate with corresponding, single-pronged metal buckles, to the ends of the straps with retaining loops, sewn to the base of the pack. The other ends of these curving straps are wrapped and sewn around metal hooks, oriented towards the reverse of the pack, where a wide band of leather edging is sewn. Near the base of each side panel are sewn two, leather loops, arranged alongside of one another and each rising 2 3/8". One of the loops to the left side panel rises 4 1/8", and is divided into two by a central stitch line. These loops allowed additional pieces of equipment to be attached to the pack. The top and the top of the reverse has sewn and rivetted to it a leather reinforcement strip, from which extend each of the rivetted bases of the leather shoulder straps. These straps are 1 7/8" wide, until about their mid-point, where an additional strap is rivetted to their reverses, after which they taper to a 7/8" width and terminate in sewn on, transverse pieces of leather. The additional, 11/16" wide straps are both wrapped and sewn around metal, single pronged buckles, through which the straps double back upon themselves, one of the thirteen prongs holes to their ends then mating with their buckles, creating a loop. Metal "D" rings are fed through each of their formed loops, beyond which are leather retaining loops. A short leather tab with a square metal "ring" to its end is riveted to the top center of the pack. The interior of the fold-over flap has a large pocket and pocket flap, both of cotton/rayon, fastened by three alloy dish buttons, a buttonhole and two cord loops. The main body of the interior has a dual ply canvas panel rising 3 1/2" from its base, with canvas flaps extending 6" in from either side. The flap to the right has three, equidistantly spaced, blackened leather straps, each with six prong holes to them, sewn horizontally along its edge, and the panel to the left has corresponding, single-pronged metal buckles to the ends of similar straps sewn to it. The base of the right flap also has a leather strap descending from it, which would pass under the horizontal loop of leather to the dual ply panel, and whose single stud hole would then mate with a metal stud to the center of the base of the pack. The interior back wall is lined in quilted cotton/rayon, to the top of which exits the bases of the shoulder straps, and above which is a reinforcing panel of what appears to be rawhide. Descending from the center of the rawhide is a canvas pocket, 7" wide and with an open top, to one side of whose 31/4" deep slash to its front is a horizontal, stud holed strap, and a metal stud is to its other side. A triangular piece of leather reinforces the base of the slash. There is a tear to the lower left seam, could easily be fixed. Nice example.
