H024459 6 X 30 POWER ISSUE FIELD BINOCULARS. (Doppelfernrohr)
BACKGROUND: The German army used a wide variety of optical enhancement items with the 6 x 30 power, (6 power magnification with a 30mm diameter objective lens), binoculars being the standard issue optics utilized by all branches of service. Although the 6 x 30 power binoculars were the standard issue, specialized personnel such as Artillery observers, Reconnaissance personnel, Searchlight personnel, etc., required stronger optics and assorted larger power binoculars were issued to these specialized personnel on a limited basis. When issued the binoculars came with a variety of assorted accessories.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tooled alloy and aluminum construction, 6 x 30, power, binoculars with molded black bakelite fittings. The lens bodies retain about 80% of their original, rough textured, black paint and the aluminum end piece fittings retain about 90% of their original, smooth, black painted, finish with small spots of wear to the base alloy of each. The binoculars have molded, black bakelite eye sockets which are fully intact and the focus adjustment still functions. The optics are still fairly crisp and clear with some minor smokiness. The right lens has a horizontal, reticle pattern with vertical bars emanating from the center, outward, to either side in increments of 10 degrees up to 40 degrees to each side. The central lens joining bracket with swivel width adjustment is intact and still functions. The right hand side, ocular end, body panel is well marked with the impressed designation, "Dienstglas 6 x 30", (Service Glasses), the serial number, "70980" and the grid-scale designation, "H/6400". The left hand side, ocular end, body panel is also well marked with the impressed manufacturer’s three letter code, "cag", indicating manufacture by D. Swarovski Glasfabrik und Tyrolit-Schleifmittelwerke of Wattens/Tirol and a triangular lubricant code, signifying a lubricant which was effective in temperatures ranging from +122 to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. The binoculars come with their original roughly, 39 1/4" long, 3/8" wide, blackened leather carrying strap. The carrying strap is attached to two, raised, cut-out bars on the bottom of the binocular lens bodies with two, corresponding, alloy, retaining studs. The strap is in overall good condition and the leather is still quite supple.
